By default, ChatGPT uses conversations from consumer accounts to train its AI models. This means the text you enter — including any data that was not caught by Aegis or any other tool — may be used to improve future versions of ChatGPT. You can disable this in your ChatGPT settings.
How to Opt Out
- Open ChatGPT
Go to chatgpt.com and sign in to your account. - Open Settings
Click your profile icon in the bottom left corner, then select Settings. - Go to Data Controls
In the Settings menu, click Data Controls. - Disable training
Turn off the toggle labelled "Improve the model for everyone". - Confirm
If prompted, confirm your choice. The setting takes effect immediately for all future conversations.
What This Means
- Toggle on (default): Your conversations may be used by OpenAI to train and improve its models. Conversations may be reviewed by OpenAI staff.
- Toggle off: Your conversations are no longer used for training. OpenAI retains them for up to 30 days for abuse monitoring, then deletes them.
Business & Enterprise Accounts
If you use ChatGPT Team, Enterprise, or access ChatGPT through an API, your conversations are not used for training by default. No action is needed.
Additional Privacy with Aegis
Aegis replaces personal data in your documents and messages with placeholders before they reach ChatGPT. Combined with opting out of model training, this gives you two layers of protection: your personal data never reaches OpenAI, and your conversations are not used to train future models.
